FIFA published the official list of the 170 members of the refereeing body for the World Cup.
The total refereeing team for the biggest World Cup in history is made up of 52 referees, 88 assistant referees and 30 VAR assistants , coming from the six confederations and 50 member federations for the World Cup.
According to FIFA, this selection was made after a three-year selection process based on the performance of each referee in FIFA competitions, both national and international, always prioritizing the quality of the selected referees’ work.
Pierluigi Collina, FIFA’s head of referees and chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, declared that the selected referees “are the best in the world” and emphasized that, in addition to having officiated numerous matches, they have also prepared themselves through seminars.
As this is the biggest World Cup in history, with 104 matches, FIFA has appointed 41 more referees than for the last World Cup, Qatar 2022, and, regarding the presence of female referees, six female referees were called up this year, “which maintains the trend started four years ago in Qatar, in our effort to continue developing female refereeing.”
