As winter travel season approaches, the Caribbean is offering more than beaches — eight destinations are standing out for their street food culture. Trinidad, Nassau, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Barbados, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and St. Martin are drawing food lovers with dishes served from roadside stalls, beach stands and open-air markets rather than formal restaurants.

Trinidad is widely considered the region’s street-food capital, especially Port of Spain. The island’s mix of Indian, African and other influences comes alive in dishes like doubles with curried channa and tamarind, bake and shark at Maracas Bay, pholourie, aloo pies, roti and corn soup from vendors at Queen’s Park Savannah. In Nassau, Potters Cay just minutes from downtown is the go-to spot for fresh conch salad, while Piñones outside San Juan serves some of Puerto Rico’s best frituras. Jamaica is known for jerk cooked on roadside grills and Barbados for its fried fish cakes, while the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe, Martinique and St. Martin offer Creole flavors with a street-side twist.

For travelers, these eight islands show that some of the most memorable Caribbean meals come wrapped in paper and eaten on the go.
