BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – St. Kitts and Nevis is taking a major step toward clean energy. The government has launched a new project aimed at powering the entire Federation with 100% renewable electricity. The plan is backed by the European Union through the Euroclima Caribbean program, and will be carried out by UNDP alongside the Greening The Islands Foundation. Together, they’ll create a detailed roadmap outlining the policies, investments, and technologies needed to overhaul the energy sector.

This roadmap falls under the EU’s Global Gateway Investment Agenda. It will help the country expand renewable energy use, boost energy security, cut reliance on imported fossil fuels, and meet its goal of slashing CO2 emissions by 61% before 2030. The process will take about 18 months and include consultations with both public and private sector players, plus technical studies and investment planning.

The initiative officially kicked off with a two-day workshop on June 3-4 at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort. That event launched the global “100% RES Islands Initiative” in St. Kitts and Nevis. Government officials, energy experts, and international partners reviewed the current energy system, discussed challenges and opportunities, and set the next steps for reaching the renewable target.

Konris G. Maynard, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy, Utilities, ICT and Posts, pointed to several projects already in motion: an Electric Vehicle policy, solar integration programs, geothermal work in Nevis, a 50MW solar plant with 30MWh battery storage, shore power for cruise ships, smart metering, and solar + microgrids for government buildings.

“Each of these projects shows why we need this roadmap now,” Maynard said. “It will bring everything together and make sure our infrastructure is ready for this green shift.”
